 In the 1960s to 1980s, many Cubans spoke Russian language. The Cuban government committed to introducing baseball to the Soviet Union for many years, however these efforts ended in failure.

On the contrary with the cooperation of Soviets, Cuba was born as world powerhouse in chess in 1966, with former socialist countries, began Olympic climbing in boxing in 1968, afterwards field and track or athletics, as well as the famous jump-high world record, women's and men's volleyball...

For instance Alberto Juantorena Danger. Olympic champion in athletics run over 400 and 800 meters in Montreal in 1976, the only runner who achieved such a double result in the Olympic Games, plus with world record over 800 meters.

Personally, I am a product of the Cuban sports system as a chess player. Former national school gold medalist, four-year Junior Champion of Havana Province, and two-year fifth-ranked Cuban Junior when I quitted professional chess practice in 1978. Four years (1972-1976) in secondary school, then grades 7th-10th, I lived off home in a boarding school campus of Havana's Sport Talents, where soccer was a physical sport for us chess players; our team was second after school's soccer team, that players played with us for their training, resulted in a small advantage difference for them. At that times the second sport for me was table tennis;  I think it keeps my reflexes in good shape. In the 80's in Poland I did judo and in Cuba swimming and body-building at the same time. In 1999 I returned to chess practice and few months later became a coach to woman grandmaster.
